Flyer – Advice to support your child returning home after otoplasty

Ce contenu est un contenu alternatif.

Dear Parents,

Your child has just undergone surgery on their ears (otoplasty).
Here are a few useful tips to make their return home smoother.

POST-OPERATIVE COURSE

After the operation, your child will wear a headband supporting one or both ears, fastened around their
head.
The surgeon will tell you how long your child needs to wear the headband.
Your child may experience:

  • Headaches
  • Pain in the ear
  • Discomfort due to the headband, if it is a little tight

HEALING

The sutures will be removed between the 7th and 10th day after the operation.
Do not remove the dressing yourself. The surgeon will remove it at the first consultation.

DISCHARGE FROM HOSPITAL

Your child will be discharged after a medical review, usually the day after the operation.
During this visit, make sure you have received:

  • An appointment for the next check-up,
  • A medical prescription,
  • Medical certificates for the daycare, school, sport activities,
  • The certificate for your employer, if required.

Don‘t hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

ON LEAVING THE DEPARTMENT

When you leave the department, please notify the care team and, if applicable, return the access
badge.

POST-OPERATIVE ADVICE

To help your child recover properly, please follow the advice below:

  • Give your child painkillers as prescribed, adapting to your child‘s needs. Follow the recommended doses carefully.
  • Do not touch the dressing unless advised by the surgeon.
  • Choose clothing s that does not need to be pulled over the head (e.g. shirts, cardigans) to avoid pulling on the ears.
  • Have your child sleep on their back, if possible.
  • Do not wash your child’s hair before the stitches are removed.
  • Avoid sports activities such as swimming, gymnastics, etc.
  • Avoid any impact to the head (trampolines, jumps, rough play, etc.).
  • Do not give medicines containing aspirin (risk of bleeding).
  • Avoid contact with people who are ill during the first few days.

BE AWARE

  • If the bandage slips, reposition it gently, without touching the wound.
  • If there is significant bleeding, mark the extent of the stain on the dressing, apply a cold compress and contact the surgeon.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE QUICKLY

In the majority of cases, recovery is very smooth.
If your child has any of the following symptoms:

  • Persistent fever (≥ 38.5°C) after 36H,
  • Presence of red, fresh blood on the dressing,
  • Persistence of intense pain for more than one week.

We advise you to contact the surgeon using the number given on the prescription, or the 24-hour care unit on the following number: +352 2862 6521.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your trust.
The whole team wishes you a peaceful recovery at home.
