Flyer – Advice to support your child returning home after a tympanostomy tube insertion

Dieser Inhalt ist ein alternativer Inhalt.

Dear Parents,

Your child has had tympanostomy tubes inserted.
Below you will find some information and useful recommendations to support them on their return home.

POST-OPERATIVE COURSE

Some secretions or discharge may occur from the operated ears.
You may gently clean the outer ear only, using a clean cloth and water.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The tubes usually remain in place for up to 18 months.
They are normally expelled spontaneously, and the opening in the eardrum usually closes on its own. The presence of the tubes does not interfere with daily life.
Your child can resume their activities as soon as this is authorised by the doctor.

BEFORE DISCHARGE

Your child will be discharged after a medical review, usually the day after the operation.
During this check-up, make sure you have received:

  • An appointment for the next check-up;
  • A medical prescription;
  • Medical certificates for daycare, school and sport activities,
  • A certificate for your employer, if required.
  • A prescription for custom-made earplugs.

Please feel free to ask the surgeon any questions you may have. Normal life (daycare, school) can resume the very next day.

ON LEAVING THE DEPARTMENT

When you leave the department, please notify the care team and, if necessary, return the badge to access the department.

POST-OPERATIVE ADVICE

Please follow these recommendations at home:

  • Give pain relief medication as needed, according to medical instructions and your child’s discomfort.
  • Do not put anything in your child’s ears unless prescribed by the surgeon,
  • Keep water out of the ears, especially during the first 10 days.After that, custom-made earplugs should be used.
  • Do not clean the ears with cotton buds,
  • Avoid contact with ill people in the days following the operation

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH RETURN HOME

  • Plan a quiet activity at home for the rest of the day (reading, drawing, film),
  • Avoid going out or visiting people,
  • Stay alert for signs of fatigue or discomfort,
  • Provide a reassuring environment – a familiar blanket or cuddly toy can help your child to feel safe.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE QUICKLY

  • Persistent fever (≥ 38.5°C) after 36 hours,
  • Significant discharge mixed with blood,• Onset of otitis,
